Abstract

Lung cancer is one of the most incident neoplasms in the world, representing the main cause of mortality for cancer. Many epidemiologic studies have suggested that physical activity may reduce the risk of lung cancer, other works evaluate the effectiveness of the use of the physical activity in the suppression, remission and reduction of the recurrence of tumors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of aerobic and anaerobic physical activity in the development and the progression of lung cancer. Lung tumors were induced with a dose of 3mg of urethane/kg, in 67 male Balb – C type mice, divided in three groups: group 1_24 mice treated with urethane and without physical activity; group 2_25 mice with urethane and subjected to aerobic swimming free exercise; group 3_18 mice with urethane, subjected to anaerobic swimming exercise with gradual loading 5-20% of body weight. All the animals were sacrificed after 20 weeks, and lung lesions were analyzed. The median number of lesions (nodules and hyperplasia) was 3.0 for group 1, 2.0 for group 2 and 1.5-3 (p=0.052). When comparing only the presence or absence of lesion, there was a decrease in the number of lesions in group 3 as compared with group 1 (p=0.03) but not in relation to group 2. There were no metastases or other changes in other organs. The anaerobic physical activity, but not aerobic, diminishes the incidence of experimental lung tumors.

Our Mission

IOP Publishing is a society-owned scientific publisher, providing impact, recognition and value for the scientific community.

We work closely with researchers, librarians and partners worldwide to produce academic journals, books and conference series. Our aim is to cover the latest and best research in the physical sciences and beyond.

A society publisher

As a subsidiary of the Institute of Physics, any surplus made by IOP Publishing goes directly to the Institute to assist their mission to help everyone build their knowledge of physics and to provide professional support for physicists.

IOP Publishing supports global schemes such as INASP and EIFL to promote the dissemination of and engagement with science in developing and transition countries.

Delivering impact, recognition and value

IOP Publishing provides a range of services to help the scientific community register, validate, edit, disseminate, preserve and maximise the discoverability and authority of their research.

These services include: developing novel and innovative journals to meet new community needs; managing peer review; archiving and preserving content; hosting and distributing research online; enabling the discovery of published research; introducing new tools and systems to help authors demonstrate the impact of their work; and publicising journal papers and their authors.

IOP Publishing (previously Institute of Physics Publishing) is the publishing company of the Institute of Physics. It provides publications through which scientific research is distributed worldwide, including journals, community websites, magazines, conference proceedings and books. The Institute of Physics is a scientific charity devoted to increasing the practice, understanding and application of physics. Any financial surplus earned by IOP Publishing goes to support physics through the activities of the Institute.

The main IOP Publishing headquarters is in Bristol, England, and the North American headquarters is in Philadelphia, United States. It also has regional offices in Washington, D.C., Mexico City, Beijing, Tokyo, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Sydney. It employs over 300 staff.

It was the first physics publisher to publish a journal on the internet. In 1994, the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity was published as a TeX file. In January 1996, the organisation launched the full electronic journals programme on the World Wide Web, ahead of other physics publishers.[1]

Physics World, the monthly magazine of the Institute of Physics, was first published in October 1988.[2] The title, published by IOP Publishing, won in the App/Digital Edition category for Association/Non-Profit (B-to-B) brands in the Eddie Digital Awards. It also picked up an honourable mention for best Design Cover in the Association/Non-Profit (B-to-B) category in the Ozzie Awards.[3]

Journals

Main category: IOP Publishing academic journals

IOPscience is the online service for journal content. Journals include:[4]

Some of these journals are published on behalf of other societies; for example, the Astrophysical Journal group of titles are published in partnership with the American Astronomical Society.

Books

IOP Publishing sold its books publishing division (with the imprint Adam Hilger) to Taylor & Francis in 2005.[5] As a consequence of recent significant changes in the publishing landscape and demand for ebooks, IOP Publishing launched an ebook programme in 2012.[6] IOP Publishing partnered with Morgan & Claypool on a book programme which is focussed on researchers who are in the early stages of their research careers or who would like to approach a research field more broadly and across disciplines.[7] In 2014 IOP Publishing and the American Astronomical Society announced an electronic book publishing partnership as part of the AAS’s mission to enhance and share humanity’s scientific understanding of the universe.[8]
